“Ustvarjam večplasten prostor kot odgovor na senzibilno zaznavanje sveta.”

“I am creating a space of dichotomy as an answer to the sensibilities of perception in the environment.”

Izjava avtorice

Raziskovanje metaforičnih potencialov keramike rezultira v kiparskih, instalacijskih in performativnih delih, pri čemer materija prevzame vlogo naratorja in definira interpretacijsko polje.

Črepinja se v svoji obliki pojavlja skozi serije del v vedno novih kontekstih, s čimer postaja vedno bolj prisoten element v ustvarjalnem procesu.

Artist’s Statement

My exploration of the metaphorical potential of ceramics results in sculptural, installation, and performance works, where matter takes on the role of a narrator, defining the scope of interpretation. Limiting myself to the medium of ceramics allows me to deepen my understanding of the chosen material and explore potential interpretations and contexts suitable to its characteristics. In terms of content, the formations of matter provide a key for the exploration of subconscious and collective themes. I’m particularly intrigued by the relationship between shaped matter and the body, as well as the spatial dynamics that emerge when the artwork is placed within a chosen space. The latter is understood in a multi-layered manner, consistently embodying a triangular relationship between the object, the subject, and the space.

In my recent works, I delve into the concept of destruction as a form of construction – a process for creating new works. Here, I recycle older or damaged pieces, continually questioning the finality of form and trying to discern when the intended state for the material is achieved. Regardless of the form or purpose of the object created, I never perceive it as a final product. Instead, I view it as perpetually mutable, influenced by context, time, and space. Shards persistently emerge across numerous series of works, consistently finding new contexts. This ongoing presence makes them an increasingly integral element of the creative process.

Short biography

Kristina Rutar (1989, Slovenia) completed her studies in ceramics at the Faculty of Education, University in Ljubljana, in 2013. She continued her post-graduate studies in interdisciplinary printmaking at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wroclaw, Poland.

Rutar mainly works in sculpting and ceramics, questioning the traditions of the two mediums. While working with the potter’s wheel she tries to find the line between practical and impractical objects, which results in dynamic and dichotomous sculptures. Her works are regularly exhibited at group as well as solo exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad. She has shown her work in Ritual of a Shadow (Gallery Velenje, 2022) and On the Origin of Species (Lapidarij Božidar Jakac, Kostanjevica na Krki, Slovenia, 2018) , as well as in group exhibitions such as the 61 Premio Faenza (MIC Faenza, Italy, 2020), XIV International Biennial of Ceramic Art in Aveiro (Portugal, 2019), the British Ceramics Biennial, Future Lights (China Hall, Stoke-on-Trent, Great Britain, 2018) and the European Ceramics Context (Bornholm Art Museum, Nexo, Denmark, 2018). She received numerous awards and acknowledgements, and her works can be found in public as well as private collections.

She lives in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where she works as an assistant professor of ceramics at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design. She is a member of International Academy of Ceramics and other numerous artist associations.
