“I am creating a space of dichotomy as an answer to the sensibilities of perception in the environment.”

Izjava avtorice

Z novimi pristopi k izbranemu mediju razgrajujem tradicionalno pojmovanje in preizprašujem temelje lončarskega vrtenja, saj objekte prvenstveno razumem v konceptualnem in ne tehnicističnem smislu. Skozi zaznavanje telesa ustvarjam arhetipske, elementarne konstelacije.  Izolirani in opazovalcu nedosegljivi kipi se preko svoje odmaknjenosti vračajo v primarno stanje zavetja in varnosti. V namerni omejitvi pristopa k oblikovanju vidim priložnost za iskanje širine likovnih izrazov.

Artist’s Statement

I am creating a space of dichotomy as an answer to the sensibilities of perception in the environment. The response of experiencing the surroundings is mirrored in the relationship that is created between an object and a subject. It is within this that I am exploring the interrelation of freedom and captivity, presentness and absentness, and shelter and exposure. At the same time, I bring awareness to the fragility of social structures and relationships in contemporary society. I perceive space as multilayered; as the negative space of an object, as the space in which we are present, and as my personal space within society.

The main motive of my work is the body, in its broadest sense. Its form contains several variables, both in its symbolism and the space it occupies. I create archetypical, elementary constellations through my experience of sensing the body. Isolated and unreachable to the viewer, it is through their detachment that the forms are able to return to their primary state of shelter and safety. I question the traditional understanding of pottery by utilizing new approaches to the medium, as my primary understanding of the objects lies in their conceptual and not technical and functional purpose. I see an opportunity to expand the width of artistic expression by intentionally limiting myself to the potter's wheel and throughout curating the creative process, I create sculptural objects and detach the forms from their functionality. I see the craft of the potter's wheel as a necessity for creating sculptural objects.

Eugeniusza Gepperta v Vroclavu, Poljska, zaključila podiplomski program Interdisciplinarna grafika.

Bienal Internacional de Cerâmica Artística de Aveiro (Aveiro, Portugalska, 2019), British Ceramics Bienial, Future Lights, (China Hall, Spode, Stoke-on-Trent, Velika Britanija, 2018) in European Ceramic Context (Bornholm Art Museum, Nexo, Danska, 2018).

Short biography

Kristina Rutar (1989, Slovenia) completed her studies in ceramics at the Faculty of Education, University in Ljubljana, in 2013. She continued her post-graduate studies in interdisciplinary printmaking at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wroclaw, Poland.

Rutar mainly works in sculpting and ceramics, questioning the traditions of the two mediums. While working with the potter’s wheel she tries to find the line between practical and impractical objects, which results in dynamic and dichotomous sculptures. Her works are regularly exhibited at group as well as solo exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad. She has shown her work in “On the Origin of Species” (Lapidarij Božidar Jakac, Kostanjevica na Krki, Slovenia, 2018) and “Alma Mater” (Savinov likovni salon, Žalec, Slovenia, 2017), as well as in group exhibitions such as the 61 Premio Faenza (MIC Faenza, Italy, 2020), XIV International Biennial of Ceramic Art in Aveiro (Portugal, 2019), the British Ceramics Biennial, Future Lights (China Hall, Stoke-on-Trent, Great Britain, 2018) and the European Ceramics Context (Bornholm Art Museum, Nexo, Denmark, 2018). She received numerous awards and acknowledgements, and her works can be found in public as well as private collections.

She lives in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where she works as an assistant professor of ceramics at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design. She is a member of numerous artist associations.
